Origins of our Weekday Names

Our weekdays are named Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Did you ever wonder where those names originated? Well, I'm happy to clear that up.

While the Romans were great conquerors, they were lousy calendar makers. To start with, in their early days their calendars were made up of 10-month years containing eight-day weeks (so Paul McCartney WAS right)!

Okay, so what were they called and what were they named after? The ancient Roman calendar names the first and second day of the week after the sun and the moon, respectively. The remaining five days were named after the five planets they could see at night, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus and Saturn.

Stay tuned for the rest of this explanation.
